It’s big. It’s red. It’s old. I think it’s a silo. Found along the back roads of western Oregon…
Update – thanks to longtime reader Montucky it has been identified as an old incinerator that was used to burn sawdust and woodchips generated by sawmills.

Gorgeous!
It;s magnificent!
Those used to be all over western Montana. They were used by the sawmills to burn the sawdust and wood chips from the sawing operations because in those days (40’s and 50’s) there was little use for it and it just piled up.
Thanks! I thought it was odd for a silo to have an open top but I couldn’t figure out what else it could be.
Used by sawmills, fascinating! I love old architecure. One small comment, I find the powerlines distracting and would remove them.
Mike, Sherry Lynn’s response is correct. Every lumber town in the northwest usually had one of these burning wood waste 24/7. I was raised in Astoria. The plywood mill had one on the premises. When you passed that area of town there was always a slight haze and a hideous odor of wet wood. I think the EPA finally started cracking down on the silos in the mid-80s.
